I have an offer and took a drug test today, not great money, but ok for my lil repressed area and future promotion (! to 1.5 yrs) as my manager is being promoted up and if I turn out to not be an idiot, will be in line for that position.....and money!
Sounds good right? well here is the worried part, once I am employed, I lose unemployment and can not get it back, so if this job fires me or something, I lose the house and life as I know it.......
But I feel I will do good at this job, big learning curve (Supervisor of machine room for a newspaper) for the machines (Gotta learn how to set up and operate them).....But I am a fast learner and can run any dam machine if given a chance and have plenty of supervisory skills....
Am I being dumb being worried?

Best of luck to ya Jim!
Anyway they can give you a three month probation period? After that...you would be eligible again if needed. I know the feeling of being uncertain about the future...been living it for the last 5 years.

I will add that the selfish side of me hoped the position in my area would have happened instead.

Talked with my new boss twice now and both times he has really mad me fell real good about myself and this position, which eases me.....
As it turns out, this is the last week of EUC unemployment, no notice, just a letter explaining that Congress left for holidays and did not fund unemployment so American workers now out of work are no longer getting anything...NICE GOING!
So no money, new job which I will not get a check till Jan 15th, will be very tight, gotta explain to all my bills they are not getting paid for 1 month, but I am very grateful for the job! Now more than ever......
The lord moves in mysterious ways.......

So how was payday? I haven't had one since before Christmas...I keep getting told SOON, just hang in there. Today is the first one, we get paid every 2 weeks..... I really like this position, my boss is great, he told me I am to monitor my own hours and if I need to get more to make 40, stay if I need to leave, go.... Also I got free health club membership, wife pays 10 a month. I play golf with cart for 1 dollar! I start medical/dental and stuff Feb first... So far so good......They keep asking me if I like the job and things like that...LOL not used to that, seems they think I might split. Jim

Congrats Jim! Glad you found a job you like, and they like you. The whole EUC thing sucks balls!!! Mine ended 12/28 have had one income for over a month now, which has been a huge pain in the ass. Upside I've been offered position with NYS taxation and finance. I start 2/21. Never worked in office setting before, but the pay is ok and It has benefits. The downside is its temp, but may last a ling time.
We'll see how it all shakes out I guess.

Seems a lot of people are having "fun" with new work. I feel like mine has been sucking the life out of me. My 6 month review centered around complaints about difficulty finding me outside of my working hours (no shit you can't find me when I'm not at work, how can that be a surprise?), and several people not knowing what I do. So my hours changed, and I implemented a basic ticket system that's open for review upon request. A lot of things I do (IT infrastructure), the first thing is to disconnect everyone from a computer/network/server/system. Server maintenance moved from ~7-9pm to ~1-3pm. You can imagine all the happy people when the high performance storage array is going down for 2 hours in the middle of the day. The most vocal just happen to be the same ones that complained about not being able to find me in the morning when I was working evenings. Sorry, guys, you got what you asked for. I'm not doing it out of spite, I'm doing it at the time corresponding to my normal schedule that you wanted changed. Had a talk with my boss beforehand, and explained I wasn't going to like it, neither would he, and the schedule change was going to cause issues. He said he understood, but too bad: 'they won't know what you do until you're not doing it' with a shrug and nod. I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy, somewhat, telling a person that complained I was not available in the morning that I am not available after 3pm now, that his issue is not my emergency, if it was an emergency to dial 911, he would have to submit a trouble ticket before I could begin assisting him in any way, and new tickets will be assigned when I return the next morning. Oh, and last week the $33k server I ordered came in. While taking pics, I found out I was sent the wrong item. The DAS bays seemed to be right, but the dual HBA, quad GbE and dual 10GbE SR fiber ports seemed to be missing. 96TB of storage, and not a single way to connect to it

The DAS bays seemed to be right, but the dual HBA, quad GbE and dual 10GbE SR fiber ports seemed to be missing. 96TB of storage, and not a single way to connect to it And two days later, I found the "new" $66k detector panel wasn't working. After probing it with an o-scope and calling it dead, I called the manufacturer. The one year warranty was up on the 20th. RMA'ed with fingers crossed that they'll cover it, since it was only turned on for the first time the second week of January. Almost $100k in RMAs in two weeks.

My job is doing good, but DE why is the warranty up if you just got them? Jim It was delivered Feb 20th, 2013 after being ordered in August 2012. I broke the seal on the vacuum pack in May 2013 to put inventory tags on it, check the serial number, and verify that it was actually in the box. After that, I didn't touch it again until late November. I had a student assistant work half a week before Christmas and the entire first week in January hand wiring and testing a video cable (40 individual 30 gauge wires on each end, with some asininely small spacing - or a 6 month lead time from the manufacturer). I spec'd and wired all the power, modded a PC to talk, wrote a simple interface to snap images. Had 3 days blocked out to debug it in January, but it worked the first time we turned everything on. After that, I turned it over to the researchers and machine shop to finish the build out. Since then, it's had a dozen hands on it. Making mounts, rails, rotary stages, axial and transaxial load frames; panel goes in and out every time there's a test or change in the cabinet. Sadly, without protocol in place to shut down everything before working, it's been connected & disconnected while powered. The manufacturer's engineers think that might be the source of the issue. We reviewed all our literature, and didn't find a warning against dis/connecting while powered.

Okay, so...New job is a zombie type thing. Putting numbers on lines. Not really my thing, but they pay me.
Good news...found the 3 collage creds that I was missing for my TEACH Cert!. Now maybe in September I can get my ass back where it belongs!!
